Combat Basics

Combat Flow

Touching or swinging at an enemy will initiate combat.
Enemies will sometimes engage you in combat while you are traveling to a gathering area.
During combat, characters can perform actions when it is their turn.

Victory and Defeat

Reduce all of the enemies' HP to zero to win the battle and claim experience and ingredient rewards.
If all of your allies' HP is reduced to zero, you will be defeated.
Losing will return you to the atelier, and some of your equipped items will be lost.

Formation Effects

Formation refers to your characters' positions on the field.
It impacts their stats and effectiveness in battle.
You can change your formation with the Formation command, or via Formation in the Main Menu.

First Line Increases physical attack and magic defense but reduces magic attack and physical defense.
Second Line Stats are unchanged.
Third Line Increases magic attack and physical defense but reduces physical attack and magic defense.

Auto-Battle

Press the designated button during combat and the characters will fight by themselves (auto-battle).
Recommended for players who want more laid-back combat.

Combat Screen

Characters

Displays your allies' HP, MP, and formation.

Timeline

Shows turn order. The leftmost character will act first.

Basic Commands

Choose how the character will spend their turn.

Attack

Attack an enemy.

Guard

Guard against incoming attacks.

Reduces damage taken until the next turn comes around.

Item

Use an equipped item.

Consumes MP.

Special Attacks

Use a powerful skill. The effects of the skill depend on the character.

Consumes MP and delays the character's next turn.

Formation

Change formation.

Formation can also be changed via Formation in the Main Menu.

Flee

Attempt to run away from combat. Success will end the battle.

Some battles cannot be fled from.

Status Effects

Items and enemy attacks can cause changes in the status of allies and enemies (status effects).
There are three primary types of status effects.

Sleep Prevents a unit from acting.
May be removed at the end of a turn or after being attacked.
Paralysis Items and Special attacks become unusable, and the character's speed is reduced.
May be removed at the end of a turn.
Poison Reduces HP to zero after 3 turns.
May be removed at the end of a turn.
